  The Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh

With its prime location on Princes Street and stunning views of the Castle, the Gothic Edinburgh hotel, The Balmoral, is a dead cert for star turns.

When the Scottish capital played host to the MTV Award, Beyoncé and English pop princess Dido checked into this most regal of hotels. Beyoncé liked it so much, she had her picture taken with the doorman. As demanding guests go, the Rolling Stones must surely take some beating. When all four members approached the hotel with a request for four two-bedroom suites for themselves and their families, only three were available, so the Balmoral team smashed a wall down between two junior suites and rebuilt it the next day when the band checked out.

Go wild:

The Balmoral’s recent £7million refurbishment has put the sex back into this grande dame of the Edinburgh hotel scene. The enormous Scone & Crombie suite is definitely the one to aim for with two bedrooms, breathtaking views over the historic Old Town, open fires in the lounge and main bedroom and a mosaic and marble bathroom with a free-standing bath and double walk-in shower. Guests can dine at the Michelin starred Number One and more importantly it’s just a two-minute limo ride to Harvey Nics (the Balmoral even offers a ‘Retail Therapy’ package from £390 per night with a £100 voucher to spend at the store and a makeover – see the website). If leaving the building is just too common, hole up in the hotel diva-style and indulge in some pampering worthy of Mrs Beckham with a trip to the spa and a St Tropez tanning session and a Rehydrator Facial from E’Spa.

The rider:

Interactive television, discreetly located in-room refreshments, anything your heart desires from room service.
