Rivalda Cafe & Restaurant Budapest
Perched on top of Budapest's landmark Castle Hill Rivalda Café & Restaurant has variously been a monastery, theatre and casino.
These days the spotlight - Rivalda means footlights in Hungarian - is firmly on the food. In such a prime location it could easily be a tourist trap, but chef patron György Gunst has steered well clear of the ubiquitous goulash and meat heavy menus to showcase the best of his country's ingredients with a light and modern slant. The catfish stew with sour cream pasta was excellent and it was good to see so many veggie options available.
The menu changes with the seasons, but if you're lucky you'll find chocolate ganache, a warm freshly baked chocolate soufflé cake served with vanilla ice cream. Well, after the walk up Castle Hill you deserve it.
Wines are exclusively Hungarian, more than 45 from 15 of the 22 wine regions, often showcasing smaller vineyards and proving the point there's a lot more to local tipple than Bull's Blood.
The warm décor pays tribute to the building's theatrical history with interesting old photos and posters lining the walls and spotlights hanging from the ceiling.
