Product Review

Now, I travel a lot but I have never, ever whimpered to myself: "Oh, if only I had a special set of ‘socks' to cover up my shoes in my luggage!" What sad travellers worry about how to put their shoes in their suitcase?

I'm sure most people do what I do. If they're muddy they go in an old carrier bag, if not I can't be bothered. I don't care if my shoes touch my clothes. Or vice versa. My clothes aren't that smart anyway. They don't have to be strictly segregated. I don't believe in shoe apartheid.

But that's the tragic story of these ridiculous contraptions. Someone somewhere seems to hate and fear shoes. So they invented these huge elastic slippers to cover your shoes so that they don't make your clothes messy in your suitcase. But really, does the world need these ridiculous contraptions from America?

It's marketing gone mad. They come with a lifetime guarantee. They can be used to protect your shoes from bacteria. There are photos of various types of shoes safely cosseted within their shoe sock.

But when I read the instructions that come with the Shoe Socks I thought perhaps there are some people dumb enough to buy something to keep their shoes in. The instructions tell buyers: "Do not wear your shoes with the socks on. Doing so may cause bodily injury or EVEN DEATH."

If you're the sort of traveller who worries that you may inadvertently wear your shoes covers on your shoes without noticing then it's true... these shoe socks are simply far too dangerous for you to buy.

But people who do want to risk the deadly dangers of keeping their shoes in a shoe sock do get the comfort of having re-sealable bag to keep the shoe socks in after use. This is very handy but I think they should market an extra accessory - a box to keep the re-sealable bag in.

The big worry for these sort of travellers must be, once you use the shoe socks to carry your dirty shoes, the shoe socks themselves may become tainted with ghastly shoe dirt too. When you put a clean shoe in them another time, the clean shoe will become dirty. Perhaps the socks should be washed after every use. Or maybe you should just throw your horrible dirty filthy shoes away and just wear the lovely elastic shoe socks instead.
