Rome
Ancient Rome sits alongside and melds into a 21st-century, traffic-clogged, tourist-pounded city. Here, over 2,700 years of history are at your feet. BC meets AD in 2000-year-old weathered brick arches butting against colour-washed palazzi, Christian churches are built over pagan temples and plundered Egyptian columns grace colonnaded squares. Dark trees top hills and froth from tubs in rooftop gardens, while the fume-defying azaleas and cyclamen bloom brightly on streets and in window boxes.
You could easily spend all your time within the Vatican walls, immersed in great art. But no visit is complete without a look at the Forum and Colosseum of ancient Rome, and you simply can’t leave without seeing the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. There are churches in every street, square and round every corner, most containing magnificent works of art, some with stunning mosaics.
Rome’s hills and unforgiving pavements, not to mention the crowds and the infamous traffic – and the heat if you go in the summer months – are tiring. History, art and architecture on such a grand scale can be overwhelming. Take it slowly. Remember, no matter how long you stay, you can’t see it all!
