Still amazing after all these years, despite being neglected and plundered to build various parts of Rome, this great amphitheatre, dating from 72AD, the scene of deadly combats and gruesomely cruel spectator sport, held 55,000 people.

 

Don't miss the nearby triumphal Arch of Constantine, dedicated in 315AD to commemorate Emperor Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge three years before.
