Built by the emperor Hadrian, this Roman temple ‘of all the gods’ became a church six centuries later. The granite columns of the exterior only hint at the awe-inspiring interior. The gigantic coffered dome is 43.3m (140ft) both high and wide and the whole building is lit by the oculus at its centre. A sculpted Madonna marks the site of the tomb of the artist Raphael.
