Santa Maria Maggiore

Spectacular mosaics, from the 5th century biblical scenes in the nave to the 13th-century Coronation of the Virgin in the apse, decorate this church with a magnificent blend of architectural styles. The richly-decorated Sistine Chapel, built for Pope Sixtus V in the 16th century, is like a church within a church, and the coffered ceiling is said to have been gilded by the first gold brought by Columbus from America.
The small church of Santa Pudenziana is a short walk away, and worth the detour to see 4th-century mosaics of the apostles in Roman togas.
