The lap of luxury at Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, Cape Town

Undoubtedly giving rise to the green-eyed monster in other Cape Town hoteliers, the five-star Twelve Apostles has a magnificent situation surrounded by Table Mountain National Park and overlooking the Atlantic – even when the wind rumbles and the waves wash ashore. In fact, blustery Atlantic weather just adds to the atmosphere – although the lovely pool is a no-go then, of course.

Earning a deserved reputation as one of Cape Town's top luxury hotels, and located on Victoria Road past Camps Bay - a jaw-dropping fifteen minute drive from the city - the Twelve Apostles is out of the way enough to feel like your own special haven, but close enough to Cape Town to access its attractions.

With just fifty-five deluxe guest rooms (Classic, Mountain Facing, Luxury and Superior Sea Facing) and fifteen luxurious suites (Garden and One Bedroom Mountain Facing and Sea Facing), the understated luxury of the Twelve Apostles provides an intimate atmosphere for guests.

Rooms and suites are light, airy, blending in well with the oceanic feel to the hotel, and decorated with muted, natural colours in a mainly Colonial style (some of the Luxury Rooms have safari, stamp, shell and natural styles). Our twin-bed Classic Room was comfortable and quiet, although a little more space for a twin room would have been nicer, as our beds were close together, but this didn't deter from enjoying the room.

Guests are treated to a glass of sparkling wine when they check-in, while luggage is collected by porters from the car - everything you'd expect for five star service, which is geared towards going the extra mile (although I found smiles a little on the saccharine side – just a bit too overboard and I'd have been comfortable with a more relaxed attitude).

For dining, there are two options, the Café, open twenty-four hours, and the fine dining Azure Restaurant - a gastronomically exquisite experience to be sure. Quite easily, my meal here was one of the best gourmet dinners I've ever tasted, so eating here is a must for 'foodies' (whether staying or not). Expect a champagne breakfast in the morning (if you're not driving!), and in the evening, sundowners can be enjoyed in the Leopard Room Bar.

The Twelve Apostles also boasts one of most desired spas in Cape Town; 'Sanctuary Spa' is an idyllic, 'underground' styled spa with a Jacuzzi pool and flotation tank, as well as treatment rooms - the ideal place for guests to relax after an exhausting day exploring Cape Town.

As well, the hotel has an abundance of business guests, since the proximity to Cape Town allows this, and business travellers are catered for with a business centre.

The Twelve Apostles provides excellent value for those looking for a boutique hotel experience with exceptional dining options, rather than an anonymous international chain. A car will be needed, unless using the hotel's driver service, which can also be used for airport transfers.
