Come home to the Montagu Country Hotel, Montagu, Western Cape

Anyone doing Route 62 in South Africa's Western Cape will see Montagu along the way, and a stopover here most definitely should include a stay at the Montagu Country Hotel. In my recent 'road trip' around the Western Cape, this was actually one of the hotels I preferred the most.
Funnily, I didn't have such high expectations of the Montagu Country Hotel before arriving here – it appeared to be a cheap and cheerful option to rest at along Route 62, but nothing more. How wrong I was.
The hotel staff absolutely made our stay - so much more down-to-earth, welcoming and friendly than the stiff natures of staff in some of the posher places I've stayed in. The reception desk couldn't be more helpful, and P-J Basson, the general manager, is lots of fun - plus you'll see his little dog following him around wherever he is.
There are 33 en-suite bedrooms at the hotel and so it does have an intimate atmosphere, but definitely not cloyingly so. The rooms are furnished in an Art Deco style, and although ours did seem a little on the worn side, I still loved the general atmosphere of the hotel over everything. As well, the bedrooms are very spacious and some open out onto the courtyard.
And yes, the courtyard and pool areas are just beautiful, with Iceberg roses lining the paths and bird song in the background, they are perfect for relaxing on a warm day.
The Montagu Country Hotel's location is right in the centre of Montagu, a town which is fabulously situated for exploring the Robertson Winelands and some of the great scenery off Route 62. Even better, the manager P-J – a man very fond of his classic old cars - offers very reasonably priced tours of the surrounding area for guests in his vintage Cadillac. I think they worked out at around £25 for an hour.
In all, the Montagu Country Hotel is totally recommended. If you're planning a couple of stopovers along Route 62, aim to make one of them here.
The Montagu Country Hotel is graded both as three star and four star. Rack rate for Classic Rooms is from R530 on a bed & breakfast basis, but the hotel also periodically runs special offers.
