Edinburgh

Winner of ten major Best City awards in recent years, Edinburgh is one of the most elegant Capital cities in Europe, offering a rich history, cosmopolitan lifestyle and a glamorous backdrop for the largest cultural event on the planet, the Edinburgh International Festival.

Edinburgh of the 21st century is a city of contrasts- ancient castles, cobbled wynds, and church spires complemented by its contemporary image as a thriving, influential centre for finance, business and education. Year round you’ll find a diverse and dynamic arts, theatre and music scene. As the world’s first Unesco City of Literature it has a proud tradition of writers from Robert Louis Stevenson to J K Rowling.

Take an open-top bus tour to get your bearings, but the best way to appreciate its hidden magic is to explore on foot: stroll down the medieval Royal Mile from Castle to Palace; browse the Medieval Old Town for Scottish tweed and cashmere followed by lunch in a quaint old pub; wander around the Georgian New Town for designer fashion, art galleries and café society. From smart wine bars to Michelin star dining, there are more restaurants per head of population than any other UK city.

Above all it’s a truly romantic city. “Edinburgh”, said Stevenson, “ is what Paris ought to be”.
