Kingsley’s Steak and Crabhouse, Cowper Wharf, Sydney
Walking along the Cowper Wharf with a row of fancy restaurants to your right, the water to your left and Sydney CBD in the distance, it's understandable if - just for a moment - you worry that THIS is what you'll be spending your money on...
Possibly true of the row of other Cowper Wharf restaurants (the jury is still out on that) but certainly not true of Kingsley's Steak and Crabhouse.
Not in the slightest.
At Kingsley's, what you pay for are the essentials executed to perfection... this being: service which is laid-back and friendly yet still flawlessly knowledgeable (at one stage we were assured that the bar-man 'lives' for his alcohol... and even after testing him a little, could find NOTHING that he didn't already know, or to that matter, didn't love about his job), steaks which are cooked so delicately that they can almost be sliced like butter, and an atmosphere which even on a quiet Thursday had a cosy buzz about it.
But back to the food... as this is where Kingsley's is incomparable. It's easy to see why Kingsley's comes top of the ranks when Googling 'best streak in Sydney'... hands down, I would not argue with Google on that. The Wagyu Rib-Eye 400g ($56.90) is a 350 day grain-fed, marble score 6-7, steak from QLD and THE best steak I've tasted in Sydney so far, without a doubt. Add to this, they have a 'Carpet Bag' on the menu (250g $36.90), which, apart from the name, is absolutely beautiful... imagine surf on turf becoming surf 'within' turf... a delicious eye fillet stuffed with crab meat. Not quite as tender as the Wagyu but the mix of flavours blend together incredibly well, and, as you cut through the meat, tiny shreds of crab roll out. Great option if you love your more playful food.
On that note, if you want a really playful starter, then order the Bloody Mary Oyster Shot... what a KICK! Who knew mixing vodka, tomato juice and oysters could be so amazing.
It's unusual for me - and the sign of a great restaurant - if after a massive meal, I still want more... and at Kingsley's I was almost snatching the dessert menu from the waiter's hands. It wasn't that I was hungry (the size of the dishes ensured that) but curiosity and the need to sample more of what Kingsley's had to offer was just too much to resist...
And that's where the chocolate brownie and banana sundae comes in... wow. If you're sharing... go for the brownie chunks before your partner does... it's dessert war.
If, after all of this feeding you don't want to go home and dream about what just happened, then kick-back at the bar. The cocktail menu would hold it's own against many of Sydney's top bars... and even if there's nothing on the list you fancy, then test the knowledge of the bar man... he's sure to make you a bespoke cocktail with ease, and a big smile.
