Inverness-shire

From the shores of Loch Ness to the beaches of Nairn, Inverness-shire has many romantic gems. Achneim is the smallest of several self-catering cottages on the Cawdor Estate. Sweet and secluded, it sits amid arable farmland within walking distance of historic Cawdor Castle, the home of Macbeth. The bedroom boasts a gorgeous art nouveau brass bed with feather duvet, while the kitchen has all mod cons, and the spacious sitting room has an open fire. All the rooms are tastefully decorated in neutral colours. The fields outside are rich with wildlife and birdsong, and the sandy beaches of Nairn are five miles away. There is a “welcome hamper” of bread, jam, fresh eggs, milk, cheese, and a bottle of wine, while Cawdor village has a shop and pub. Honeymooners can walk up to the ancient ring cairn in a nearby field, visit Cawdor Castle (open May-October; admission is included), or dial for a shiatsu massage. Loch Ness is a drive away. Seven nights self-catering from £480 to £840 depending on the time of year.
