Gwynedd

This bit of Welsh coastline is best known for Portmerion. Squeezed under a crag above the Glaslyn estuary, the Plas Tan-Yr-Allt country house hotel was the home of romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. On the outside it’s all whitewashed, cottagey and evocative of Snowdonia. Inside things begin to get dramatic. The scarlet painted hallway features Percival the talking parrot and Philippe Starck chairs. Book Shelley’s Theatre with its four-poster bed, reputedly a former small theatre where the famous poet recited his works, or the dramatic red Billington room with views across to the mountains beyond. Dine on good country cooking such as Welsh laver bread on love-heart toast for breakfast! Doubles from £115 per night with breakfast.
