Gardone Riviera (Garda)

On the western shore of Lake Garda, there is pleasant tourist resort: Gardone Riviera, divided into Gardone di Sotto (Lower Gardone) where the botanical gardens and the neo-classic Villa Alba are, and the Gardone di Sopra (Upper Gardone), an historical centre located uphill where one can enjoy views of the lake and visit the complex of the Vittoriale.

The tropical Botanical Garden is also called "il Giardino Hruska Botanico" because founded by Arthur Hruska which was the dentist of the last Tsar. The artist Andre Heller set up this place, today also a modern art foundation, where one can admire the art works together with the tropical plants. The garden is open between March and October, from 9 am to 7 pm every day.

The Vittoriale was Gabriele d’Annunzio’s eccentric residence (named after a military victory: "il Vittoriale degli Italiani"). There is a war museum, a theatre, a library, and many extravagant collections of various objects, curiosities, in the Liberty style villa (the main house, called “Prioria”), like a bust of one of d’Annunzio’s lovers, the actress Eleonora Duse, which he used to cover with a veil so to not distract him. The place also hosts a mausoleum of this extraordinary and bizarre Italian personality, which was designed by himself. Gardone Riviera is connected by buses to Brescia (the closest airport), and by ferries to the other Lake resorts.
