Sirmione (Garda)
On the southern shores of Lake Garda is the popular holiday destination of Sirmione. It’s reachable easily by bus from Verona or Brescia (which are the closest airports), and by ferry or bus from Peschiera or Desenzano del Garda (closest railways stations). This enchanting tiny medieval town is close to thermal sulphur springs (whose waters come from the bottom of the Lake at a temperature of 60 C), and has two spas (“Virgilio” and “Catullo”). Great attractions are the beautiful 13th century fortress defended by a moat, the Rocca Scaligera, with Roman and medieval archaeological collections, and the remains of a Roman villa, known as the “caves of Catullus” (“grotte di Catullo”), which was probably home of the poet Catullus whose verses were inspired by these places, and now a museum (closed on Mondays). Pleasant activities are walks through the olive trees and the cypresses, the narrow streets of the historical centre (pedestrian area) and towards the promontory for a panoramic view on the lake.
