Como

Como is a pleasant town, located on the south-western branch of the upside-down “Y” shaped lake. Como combines culture, commerce and industry, and it is worldwide famous for the production of silk.

The historical centre has interesting spots to visit, like the Duomo Cathedral, built over a period of centuries, with Gothic and Renaissance features overlapping, or the San Fedele Cathedral built in the 10th century, the Romanesque church Sant’Abbondio, the gateway Porta Vittoria (11th century) and the art gallery (Pinacoteca). There is a funicular which takes you up to the top of the hill above Como, where you can enjoy stunning views. Along the banks of the lake there are many gorgeous 18th and 19th century patrician villas and romantic gardens: Villa Paravicino, Villa Resta Palladici ("the Rotonda"), the Gallia, the Villa Olmo, named for the large ancient elm tree (olmo), and Villa Geno.
