Villa Modica, Modica, Ragusa: get away from it all in southeast Sicily
With views across olive groves and hills to the Baroque town of Modica, Villa Modica is a place to get away from it all and relax.
A detached villa with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, sitting room, conservatory, kitchen-diner and laundry room, Villa Modica is large enough to accommodate 10 people. The owner, Giorgio Modica, has thought of his guests’ every need: there is free wi-fi, a large HD TV with access to Sky, CD, radio, air-conditioning, heating, cot, highchair, a large number of books to read and even collection of children’s toys and games. The villa’s fridge is stocked with basics guests may need on their arrival, and a cooked meal is prepared for clients on their first evening.
The villa has parking for six cars and the garden area is a dream. There’s a barbecue area and gazebo so that you can dine al fresco surrounded by lemon, orange, apricot, pear, plum and pomegranate trees. There’s nearly always something in flower there, whether that’s capers, roses, lilies, wisteria or daisies, meaning the garden has a happy splash of colour to it. You can flop into the large, Roman-style pool, which isn’t overlooked, and dry off lazing on one of the sun beds.
Villa Modica is five minutes’ drive from Modica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its Baroque architecture and in half an hour you can drive to the sandy beach of Pozzallo on the Mediterranean. Further along the coast are the beaches of Marina di Modica, Sampieri, Donnalucata and Marina di Ragusa. For those interested in sightseeing, Modica is a good base from which to explore the Baroque Pearl towns of the Val di Noto and, slightly, further afield, the Greco-Roman ruins of Siracusa and natural wonders of Mount Etna. For sports enthusiasts you can go horse riding, cycling and there are beautiful walks to be had in the Cava d’Ispica and Pantalica.
As attractive has his villa to rent is, the fact that guests have Giorgio as their host is the biggest boon for any visitor. A Sicilian, he spent decades living in Canada and speaks excellent English. He and his family live next door to Villa Modica and he’s a warm and friendly man who is happy to give advice on where to go and what to see in the surrounding area making a stay at Villa Modica a pleasure. Such has been the positive experience of various guests that they have returned there to enjoy the peace of its rural charms.
