Forte Village Resort and Thermae del Forte
  Forte Village Resort

Sardinia’s Forte Village is one of the world’s most celebrated destinations – popular with the rich and famous as well as ordinary families. With some seven hotels and luxury apartments, 19 restaurants and numerous sporting and leisure facilities there is something for everyone. But it is the Thermae del Forte spa facility that wins the most plaudits – a quiet and beautiful oasis that counts Saudi royalty, football stars and other famous guests among its clientèle – all seeking some therapeutic relaxation and demanding the highest standards.

The spa is tucked away in a quiet corner of the 55-acre resort, surrounded by dense foliage overhung with exotic palms and jungle-like giant creepers. Star attraction is a spectacular sequence of six heated outdoor sea water pools, built amid lava rocks and waterfalls and linked with winding paths. The water is enriched with minerals and all the pools have different salt concentrations and temperatures, ranging from 38ºC to 20ºC. The idea is to bathe in each pool in turn, starting with the hottest and finishing with the coolest. The whole exercise takes about an hour and is especially enjoyable on a sunny day.

Thermae del Forte specialises in thalassotherapy, using its own locally sourced marine products for mud treatments and wraps, sea-salt body scrubs and seaweed baths. But if gentle relaxation and pampering are more your style, you can also have traditional spa and beauty treatments, complementary health therapies and even personal dietary consultations. Treatment rooms are light and airy, built with unusual one-way glass walls and doors, so when you have a treatment you can see people walking past, but they can’t see you!

The spa has a medical centre for treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, joint and circulatory problems and sports injuries. Thalasso programmes are individually prescribed and supervised. Some guests come for specialist therapy every year and many injured footballers have been treated.

Other facilities include a large sauna, oversized steam room, spa café, timber-beamed fitness studio and Technogym. You can join in pilates and exercise classes or seek advice from the friendly personal trainers.

Upside: Stunning outdoor seawater pools; good choice of spa treatments carried out in beautiful surroundings.

Downside: Expensive. Not all the therapists speak English. Changing rooms are basic.
