This ornate, pillared 18th century townhouse on fashionable George Street creates elegant surroundings for your breakfast cappuccino and croissant or an ice cold Prosecco and leisurely lunch. The motto is "fresh, simple, Italian". Most produce - tomatoes, cheese and olive oil- is imported weekly from Milan, rustic bread, pasta and piccante sausages are home-made. The menu offers a modern take on classic home-style food that Mamma used to make. Generous fresh salads: caprini platter, (crumbled goat’s cheese, aubergines, olives and peppers), is a feast in itself. Then perhaps spaghettini tossed with chilli, cherry tomatoes and pan-fried langoustines, or tender chicken breast chargrilled with garlic, rosemary and parmesan. Desserts are healthy such as 70% Valrohna chocolate cake or try a decadent Affogato espresso with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream. Owners Victor and Carina Contini are passionate, pedantic and purist about seriously good Italian food and wine. With smooth European jazz playing, there’s a casual, cosmopolitan mood, day and night. This is the D&G of Milanese eating and drinking in Edinburgh. Bellisimo.
