Art lovers will relish the superb permanent collection of paintings, prints and sculpture as well as superb, must see, seasonal exhibitions on show at the five National galleries around Edinburgh. The National Gallery of Scotland located on the Mound beneath the Castle rock, houses the classic masterpieces from the Early Renaissance to the end of the 19th century featuring Raphael, Botticelli, Titian, Raeburn, Ramsay, Monet and Van Gogh. The adjoining Royal Scottish Academy is part of the NGS complex and used for major Festival exhibitions, lectures and special events. Check out the smart sleek Gallery Restaurant with window tables overlooking Princes Street Gardens.

The sandstone Scottish National Portrait Gallery on Queen Street opened in 1889 as the first purpose built portrait gallery in the world. The collection offers a visual history of Scottish history, royalty, culture and society, an impressive photographic archive with a regular addition of contemporary portraits.

Instead of driving, take a walk from Stockbridge in the New Town along the Water of Leith to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Gulbenkian Museum of the year 2004). Surrounded by lush parkland, Henry Moore sculptures and fabulous Landform lake, this gallery houses international and Scottish art from 1900 to the present day: Picasso, Matisse, Peploe, Warhol, Hirst. Over the road, the Dean Gallery is home to a world famous Dada and Surrealism art collection and major works by founder of pop art and sculptor Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. Both of these galleries have charming cafes (with garden patio) for coffee, glass of wine and lunch to ensure a leisurely and richly cultural day out.
