On the Île de la Cité, a glorious celebration of medieval stained glass in a Gothic church built on two levels. The low-ceilinged lower chapel was where the servants and soldiers worshipped, the soaring upper chapel (which was linked with the Palais de Justice) was for the royal family’s use. Light floods through 15m (50ft) high windows depicting over a thousand New and Old Testament scenes in breathtakingly intense colour.
Nearest Metro: Cité. Open daily 1 March - 31 October, 9.30 am - 6 pm. 1 November - 28 February 9 am - 5 pm. Last admission 30 minutes before the monument closes. Free on the first Sunday of the month from October to March.
