Air Asia long-haul now flying from Gatwick, and at amazing prices

Air Asia X, the low-cost, long-haul airline based in Kuala Lumpur, is now flying out of Gatwick Airport. But that's only half the story. Its fares are unbelievable - starting at £229 to KL.

It also has a business class, called Premium, which has lie-flat beds, also at bargain prices. The airline, an offshoot of Air Asia, which has more than 100 aircraft and a comprehensive network around Asia, has new A330-300 aircraft.

Air Asia X connects to China, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, India, Japan, Korea and France.

The airline promises seamless connections in KL and "fly thru" flights to Perth and Melbourne for £339, and New Zealand for £369.

I checked a Premium fare from Hong Kong to Paris which came out at less than £700. Other airlines charge between £2000 and £4000 for business class on this route. Air Asia X says its Premium seats have standard business class specs of 20-inch width, 60-inch pitch and stretch to 77 inches at full recline. With these specs and at these prices Air Asia X is a sensation.

Luggage has to be paid for. Pre-booked bags going international are £13 for 15kg. Meals are £5 to £8 and can be booked online. In economy passengers pay to select seats, £9 standard and £28 for "hot" seats with extra legroom.
