Capri

recommended by Paola Pane

The magical island of Capri can be reached from Naples or Sorrento, in around half an hour, by boat, hydrofoil, or ferry.

Once on the island, take the funicular up to the famous "piazzetta", a charming little square with elegant cafès and hotels, or hire a boat to explore the enchanting stretches of the coastline, which are completely inaccessible by land. From Marina Grande, rowing boats take tourists to the enchanted Blue Grotto.

Piazzetta is the starting point for some gorgeous walks. Follow via Longano towards the Natural Arch (stop at Bar Paradiso), to the natural cave Grotta di Matromania, down the steps to the path that leads to Tragara to view the Faraglioni, Capri’s landmark.

Anacapri can be reached by bus or taxi from Marina Grande. Walking down Via Michele from Piazza della Vittoria you’ll reach Axel Munthe’s Villa, built in 1880 on the ruins of the Roman emperor Tiberius villa. Close by, the church of San Michele is famous for its beautiful majolica floor depicting Adam and Eve in Paradise.

Wherever you go on the island, you will have spectacular views of the sea stretching in to infinity but for the best views take the chairlift from Piazza della Vittoria to Monte Solaro.

On the island you’ll find elegant beach clubs, like "Da Luigi", or "La Fontelina". There is no sand and the reefs are shallow, but the water is fabulous!
