If the measure of a good hotel is attention to detail then Seaham Hall in County Durham should get six stars.
When was the last time a hotel asked you how you would like your pillows? Choose from the pillow menu and a good night’s sleep is guaranteed. Other minutiae include a dedicated kitchen and chef for room service; easy to find, and more importantly easy to work, light switches by the beds; a Bang and Olufsen TV, CD and DVD player, all with an interactive remote control; and surround sound - there are speakers in the bathroom too.
The hotel also boasts more art than many a gallery, with sculptures and works by Dale Atkinson, Nicolaus Widerberg and Bridget Jones adorning the walls and public spaces.
With baths big enough for two and beds big enough (and comfy enough) for four, Seaham hasn’t traded substance for style. The hotel is steeped in romantic history - Lord Byron married Annabella Milbanke here and was inspired to write The Siege of Corinth - and this has seeped into the design and mood of the hotel. Guests are positively encouraged to lie in and take their breakfast in bed. In fact, you need never leave your room... except to go to the gorgeous Serenity Spa, which - costing more than £3 million - is one of Europe’s best spa experiences.
