Castell Deudraeth

It was always part of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis’s plan that Castell Deudraeth should form part of his enchanting Portmeirion village, but he probably never imagined it would one day look like this.

Beneath the nineteenth-century solid Welsh stone exterior of the castell lies Wales’ most stylish address - a bold and contemporary hotel with just 11 suites, and winner of the AA’s Wales Hotel of the year 2002/2003.

Fusing traditional Welsh materials such as slate, fumed oak and natural wool rugs, with cutting-edge technology and design, the rooms combine real flame gas fires and under-heated solid oak floors with flat-screen TVs and DVDs, whirlpool baths and oversized beds draped with lilac woollen blankets for maximum comfort. All are based on a neutral palette of off-whites, greys and blues. The penthouse comes with a parapetted terrace, complete with narrow slits for archers, and views over the bay that are simply gorgeous.

Elegant and welcoming in an understated style, the hideaway also lays claim to two great Conran-ish restaurants and a mind-boggling wine list.
