The Grove
Describing its décor and atmosphere as “groovy grand”, The Grove offers cosmopolitan country living aimed at the London style set - ’exclusive, but not excluding’, reads the brochure. Set in 300 acres of private gardens and parkland on the former estate of the Earl of Clarendon, the grade II-listed, eighteenth-century mansion has been painstakingly restored and extended.
The 227 rooms will strike a balance between classic and contemporary, all natural tones with splashes of chocolate and plum, with many original features plus newly designed furniture, giving an eclectic art deco feel to the place. The main house is a triumph and it’s worth paying extra to stay here, rather than in the more soulless new wing – although the new section is closer to the fabulous Sequoia spa.
Aside from the spa, there are four restaurants, three bars, a golf course where you might spot Hugh Grant or an England footballer teeing off, playground and tree house, walled garden, woodlands, meadowlands, a wetland area, beehives, two lakes, the River Gade, the Grand Union Canal... and one donkey.
