Whatley Manor, Wiltshire
Pitching itself as a more elite country house hotel Whatley espouses many of the virtues of the cool country brigade while retaining a more traditional and formal atmosphere. As the man behind the manor, Christian Landolt, explains: ’We’re definitely not another Babington House. This is not a place to see and be seen, it is a retreat to escape to, a place where international guests can avoid the media glare.’
Nestling in 12 acres of beautiful gardens, the 15 rooms and eight suites have been designed for ultimate comfort and relaxation. Each one is individually decorated with an eclectic mix of classic antiques and contemporary designer furniture from the likes of Andrew Martin, John Hutton and Rubelli.
The rooms are just the start: the Aquarius Spa is the first Clinique La Prairie outside Switzerland and the restaurant boast a Michelin star. The hotel hosts a maximum of 46 guests at any time and no children, making the staff-to-guest ratio a staggering two to one.
Though Whatley is super-exclusive, the atmosphere is one of understatement, luxury and excellence. But if you want to rub shoulders with the international jet-set be prepared to pay for it.
