Myrtle House B&B, Sheringham, Norfolk
Bed-and-breakfast establishments vary considerably in terms of food, facilities and friendliness.
A particularly good one, in my view, is Myrtle House in Sheringham, on the north coast of Norfolk.
Run by sisters Debbie and Diane, it has everything one could possibly need.
I was welcomed on a very cold December night with a big pot of tea, cake and biscuits and genuinely made to feel at home – something you don’t always experience at B&Bs.
I was asked what time I would like my breakfast, rather than being told what time it would be served, and informed that, if I had been staying longer than one night, I would have been able to come and go as I had pleased. That would have been important, because wildlife writers like myself often get up before dawn and return long after dark.
Myrtle House even has what it dubs a “walker friendly” hall where “you can comfortable remove muddy boats and wet coats and leave them to dry.” Again, very important for outdoor aficionados.
North Norfolk is a mecca for wildlife lovers, boasting everything from rare birds to seals, and Debbie and Di attract many of these nature lovers.
Dating from the late 1800s, Myrtle House has three bedrooms (two en-suite and one with a private bathroom with bath and shower). If you wish to indulge yourself at breakfast, Debbie and Diane will gladly provide a full English breakfast with various options that include free range eggs from local hens, black pudding, farm bacon, fresh mushrooms and hash browns. As I was on a diet at the time, I had to restrict myself to scrambled eggs and mushrooms. I paid £40 for bed-and-breakfast on a single person occupancy basis.
Myrtle House is situated in a quiet residential road just a few minutes from the heart of Sheringham’s town centre and the main coast road.
I wished I could have stayed longer, but I was only in the area for two days. I shall certainly return, however, when work or pleasure takes me back to the delightful north coast of Norfolk.
