The Wee Restaurant

After working his way up the culinary ladder, gaining experience with Michelin star chef Martin Wishart, Charlie Trotters in Chicago and the Orient Express Royal Scotsman luxury train, chef Craig Wood has opened his own restaurant in North Queensferry, a riverside village on the north side of the Forth Bridge. (This is Gordon Brown’s home territory – so you can expect high security all around). The restaurant is a white washed terraced cottage on the Main Street, and from the front door you enter the square dining room with mezzanine level. It’s certainly “wee,” just 24 covers, with a homely bistro look -country pine furniture, white brick walls with colourful landscapes and artwork for sale. Simple setting perhaps but this is fine dining, recently awarded Bib Gourmand status in the Michelin guide.

Craig’s speciality is creating a fishy feast with seafood delivered daily from Anstruther just up the Fife coast, but you can also expect prime Scottish rib eye steak, Perthshire lamb, duck, rabbit and game on the menu. Start perhaps with plump juicy scallops with cauliflower puree or Salad of spiced pork belly with garlic and coriander. Main courses might include pan fried Halibut, baby squid, langoustine bisque on a nest of linguine, or Roast loin of venison, choucroute, and sage gnocchi. Every dish is cooked with innovative perception to enhance flavour and texture. This guy is in love with the essence of good food and subtle taste, based on classic French cuisine style. For dessert, simple favourites such as Pear and Almond frangipane tart, Chocolate brownie and a platter of ripe Scottish artisan cheeses and oatcakes. And it’s the extras which also stand out: home made herb scented bread, ice-cold champagne aperitif, and Fairtrade house wines to sample suitable glass of white or red per course. This is exciting Michelin Bib Gourmand cooking in a relaxed, informal environment for lunch or dinner. The Wee restaurant is now on the map. Go by train to North Queensferry from Edinburgh in 20 minutes and then a 5 minute stroll down the hill. The fresh sea air will certainly give you an appetite by the time you arrive.
