Prater Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad)
The Prater, formerly imperial hunting grounds now a park with meadows, forests, avenues and sports facilities, is the setting for the giant Ferris wheel immortalised in The Third Man. Ride the historic wheel (the original was erected by an English engineer in 1897!) for a sense of nostalgia and great views over the city and the Danube from 200ft up.
The Prater Ferris wheel (Riesenrad) operates daily. January, February, November and December, 10am-7.45pm; March, April and October, 10am-9.45pm; May to September, 9am-11.45pm.
The ride costs: adult €8, child (3-14) €3.20, under-threes, free; family (2+2 under 14) €20, family (2+3 under 14) €21.
The Ferris wheel is one of the most visited sights in Vienna and The Third Man may have been filmed way back in 1948 but the city hasn’t forgotten. There’s even a museum devoted to the classic movie.
The Third Man Museum is a private collection packed with memorabilia, including Anton Karas’s original zither on which he composed the haunting music for the film.
It is open on Saturdays from 2pm-6pm.
Adult €7.50, child (10-16) €4.
