Magical, Mystical Marrakech

Stroll across Marrakech's main square Djemaa el Fna just before night falls and you'll find al-fresco dentists and snake charmers, fire-eaters and storytellers; magicians and musicians and, yes, lots of con artists too - just ignore them and they'll leave you alone.

Ascend to one of the roof-terraced cafes surrounding the Djemaa and you'll see it in all its magical, mystical glory - smoke rising in plumes from stalls selling baked snails, roasted nuts and barbecued lamb; the haunting sound of the mosque's call to prayer; the chatter of the diners seated at long trestle tables in the middle of the square, and the murmur of storytellers recounting their tales. It's been like this for centuries - a city like no other in the world.

By day and by night, an exploration of the medina's honeycombed alleyways yields treasure-trove shops, fragrant hammams (steam baths) and late-night, low-lit bars rocking to an African beat. Prepare to be enchanted...
