I fell into travel writing when I joined the Sunday Times in the last years before Rupert Murdoch bought it. I have done many other things for newspapers and magazines since then. However, the simple combination of traveling, and writing about it, has endured as an enormously enjoyable thing to do, while I have certainly tired of other branches of journalism. These days I write a regular series in the Mail on Sunday travel section entitled “Six things you must do in…” I’ve written many other full-length travel feature articles for this newspaper over the years. My portfolio also includes travel writing for the Sunday Times, The Times and other publications since the 1980s. People sometimes ask me where I like traveling to. I always reply “interesting places”. And that could range from a footpath near where I live to Easter Island. In 1998 the Italian Tourist Board gave me their "Most Intriguing Journalist" award for an essay on Turin. The German Tourist Board were not so generous. They gave me second place for an article on Nuremburg.
Roads are busy around here, in this county fringed by cities.

They were flopped out on pontoons like decadent Romans after the feast.
